How to Light Fabric - TEXTURED CLOTHES

This shoot had so many textures; the wall we shot against, the painting that was used as a textural background, the additional hair that was added plus the hairstyle, the heavy makeup and finally the clothing! From my past experience, when a shoot has so many strong elements going on, the lighting needs to be strong too. If I had chosen a soft lighting or a softbox as a modifier, I think it would have taken the shoot in a totally different direction and somehow would have made a much less effect statement.

So, on this shoot, I chose one strong, directional light source. I decided to use a beauty dish without a grid and place it fairly close to my model. Learning the right modifiers is half the battle in learning great lighting. It’s all about placement and direction that makes a difference between mediocre lighting and great lighting. And by now you know that dynamic fashion photographs all have great lighting. I placed my light very close to my model, used a pretty high setting so it was strong but the beauty dish contained the light source so it was directed right where I pointed it. I chose to place my light on the side of the model to create a very strong split lighting setup.

Choosing a side light also really enunciated the textures. On everything! The dresses, the wall, the painting, the hair, the models face! It’s one of my favorite lighting setups but I can’t always use it because it can be pretty dramatic.
